Births, Marriages and Deaths

Birth, Marriage and Death certificates may be obtained from the local Registrar or from the Office of National Statistics at Southport. Copies cost £7 with an express service at extra cost. The Canterbury Cathedral Archives provide an additional source of information on marriage records (see below).

Church Marriage Registers

Very often, marriage registers are not stored in churches after they are full. Locally, one copy goes to the Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths and the other to the Canterbury Cathedral Archives. The Archives department staff can normally produce a copy of a marriage certificate, if they are provided with the necessary details of date, and names of the couple. There is a charge for a copy certificate (currently £7) and there might be an additional charge for a 'search' fee.

For more details, contact: The Cathedral Archivist, Canterbury Cathedral Archives, Cathedral House, The Precincts, Canterbury, Kent, CT1 2EH.

Electoral Registers: The British Library has the national collection of electoral registers from 1832 to the present day. The collection is complete from 1947 onwards, but less so before then. Registers are arranged by constituencies and polling districts and there is no alphabetical list of voters. www.bl.uk/reshelp/findhelprestype/offpubs/electreg/electoral.html

HOT TIP! Use a search engine (like Google) to find "on-line" information. Someone else (perhaps a long-lost family member!) may have already researched the name you are interested in and left their findings on the web. Simply type in the name you are interested in and family history or genealogy (eg bloggs family history) and sift through the results....
