Walmer Court ruins,
Church Street, Walmer.
Located on private land between today's Walmer Court appartments
and the old parish church of the Blessed St Mary, the Old
Walmer Court was originally a Norman fortified manor house
built by the Auberville family in the 12th century.

| Historians
suggest that it was a more-or-less square hall house, which
had a first floor and turrets at the corners. On the west side,
an external stair would have given access to the first floor.
Little remains today apart from some of the flint rubble walls
and a fragment of the upper floor, next to the churchyard wall.
Both the hall house and the adjacent parish church, were originally
surrounded by a moat. Some clearance work on the site in 2008
means that the ruins can now be more easily seen from the road. |
